Mirepeisset was built in an amphitheatrical layout on the right bank of the Cesse River. The village is home to the Pont-canal de la Cesse, which Jean Goudet built from 1689 to 1690 at Vauban’s request. The canal bridge has three arches, is 64 metres long and 20 metres high.
As a travel destination, Mirepeisset is an option for travellers who would like to rent a holiday apartment.
Culture and History
The Church of Saint Sebastian dates from the 11th century, has a Saracen tower and was restored in 1895. The streets of the old village include a defensive gate; near the old village there is also a dovecote from the 11th century.
Below the village, visitors can discover the Pont de Siman and its livestock watering trough. The public Fount Lencquo fountain was rebuilt by the residents in 1847 after it had been swept away by a flood.
The Seuil de la Roupille, also known as La Garenne, is a weir built under Vauban’s direction to supply water to the Canal du Midi. The Rigole leading from La Garenne provides a walk lined with plane trees to the Porte Minervoise.
The historic waterworks also include the Epanchoir des Patiasses, built in 1694. It drains excess water from the Canal du Midi and prevents the canal from overflowing during heavy rain. The Epanchoir des Patiasses also bears the UNESCO World Heritage label.
Water and Paths
The La Garenne outdoor leisure centre in Mirepeisset provides a setting for picnics. There is also a supervised bathing area in the river. Bathing is permitted and supervised from 4 July to 31 August 2026, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Public toilets are also available at the La Garenne outdoor leisure centre.
Activities
The Ferme Équestre de Mirepeisset comprises an equestrian centre, a riding school and an FFE-certified pony club. Rides between the Cesse and the Canal du Midi are offered from there. Guided pony rides are available for children aged three and over.
