Culture and History
The prehistoric cave of Limousis contains numerous remains of cave bears, tools, pottery and Neolithic bones. Scratching marks left by bears can also be seen on the walls of the first chambers.
The Grotte de Limousis was added to the list of classified sites and natural monuments in 1947. The Grotte de Limousis offers an exclusively guided tour lasting more than one kilometre through seven chambers and to two lakes; the visit takes one hour.
The Le tour de la Grotte de Limousis trail is a very easy, one-kilometre loop that takes 20 minutes and starts and ends at the lower car park of the cave. Information panels provide details about geology, fauna and flora; a panoramic panel identifies the visible peaks.
The Maison Gaston in Limousis has a 17th-century fireplace, which was listed as a historic monument by decree of 27 September 1948. The building is privately owned.
Those who choose Limousis for their stay may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Hiking and Landscapes
La Combe de la Balboune is a difficult 4.1-kilometre hiking loop that takes two hours. The trail follows a small road alongside the vineyards of Limousis and offers views of the four castles of Lastours: Cabaret, Tour Régine, Surdespine and Quertinheux.
The Sentier du Bosc Grand reaches the ridge of Mont Simel, offering views over the Aude Valley. The trail starts and ends at the car park opposite the cemetery of Limousis.
Winegrowing
Limousis winegrowing is now part of the AOC Minervois.
