Culture and History

The Sainte-Eulalie Church stands in the heart of the village. It was built from stone quarried from the Malepère massif. The medieval settlement of Lavalette emerged in the High Middle Ages, around 1000 to 1100, around a chapel dedicated to Saint Eulalia of Mérida.

The written record also reaches far back: The name “La Valette” appears in 1224 in a document issued by Roger Bernard, Count of Foix, and Trencavel, Viscount of Carcassonne. A cross in the Lavalette cemetery bears the engraved year 1540. Two former mills by the roadside recall that grain was once grown in the municipality.

Festivals and Events

The Atelier des Artistes in Lavalette holds an exhibition every year in June in the Jésus Tolomio multipurpose hall. Traditionally, Lavalette’s village festival also takes place on the last weekend of June; it lasts three days.

Hiking and Nature

The Foyer d’Education Populaire in Lavalette offers one or two Sunday hikes every month. In October, the association also organizes a night hike. The Circuit de la Malepère circular trail passes through Alairac, Lavalette, Roullens and Montclar.

Line F is listed as connecting Carcassonne, Lavalette, Alairac and Arzens. Lavalette has shops, services and a petrol station.
