Labastide-Danjou: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

On the Canal du Midi, Port du Ségala is the first stop from the Naurouze watershed towards the Mediterranean. It has a row of houses and a spacious esplanade and is now used as a stop for recreational boating between Naurouze and Carcassonne. The facilities also include 19th-century ashlar stone quays. The Pont du Ségala dates from 1840 and is considered practically intact.

Culture and history

The new Saint John the Baptist parish church was consecrated on 10 November 1889. The parish church has choir windows depicting important episodes from the martyrdom of John the Baptist, as well as the painting “La Folie de la croix” by the painter Jules Marie Buisson. Another reminder of the local history is the Croix de la Passion: it was renovated in 2013, displays 16 emblems of instruments or objects associated with the Passion of Christ, and stands at the corner of Grand Rue and Rue du Poids Public.

The Saint John the Baptist Chapel became the place of worship of the newly formed parish in 1770. Its narrow openings in the Romanesque style and its bell gable are considered typical of the bastides of Lauragais. The war memorial for the 1914–1918 war is also located at Place de l’Église in Labastide-d’Anjou.

Waterways and routes

The historic Rigole de la Plaine borders Labastide-d’Anjou to the west. It supplies the Canal du Midi at the Naurouze watershed with water from Lac de Saint-Ferréol and the Montagne Noire. The Rigole de la Plaine has a heavily shaded towpath that is popular with hikers and cyclists in summer. The “Canal du Midi” cycle route and the towpath on the southern side of the canal also run through Labastide-d’Anjou.

The Les Collines du Vent trail runs for 48 kilometres from Avignonet-Lauragais to Fanjeaux and is one of the major hiking trails that cross Labastide-d’Anjou. It can be walked, ridden by mountain bike or completed on horseback. The Tour du Lauragais comprises seven stages over a distance of 124 kilometres and offers variants. It can be completed on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike along red-and-yellow-marked trails.

Hostellerie Étienne is a traditional restaurant with terrace service and offers an imperial cassoulet from Castelnaudary.
