Landscape
The landscape around Fitou is characterised by vineyards, dry-stone walls, Capitelles, a mineral character and garrigue. These Capitelles served as agro-pastoral shelters; 250 of them have been recorded in the municipality. The popular heritage represented by these structures is being restored and consolidated by the association “Les Capitelles Al Vent”.
Le Pla de Ventenac is a 7.0 km moderate circular hiking route in Fitou that passes through a peripheral area of the wetland in the Salses / Leucate lagoon complex and begins at the Col du Pré car park above the village of Fitou. Les Gourgues is a flooded former gypsum quarry in the Pla de Ventenac area that has gradually been colonised by moisture-loving fauna and flora.
Culture and History
The Ruines du château in Fitou have been referred to as a “castrum” since 1271. They consisted of a square complex, two sides of which have been preserved; their walls were fitted with a series of loopholes.
The Église Saint Julien & Sainte Basilisse in Fitou has been mentioned since as early as 1065. Its original building has a semicircular apse vaulted with a semi-dome.
The Chapelle Saint Joseph was built in the last quarter of the 19th century by Abbé Hugonet on the site of an earlier chapel called Saint Roch. The deconsecrated chapel currently serves as a venue for exhibitions and concerts.
Hiking
The “De la Garrigue au Vignoble” trail is a 7.2 km moderate hiking route that starts and ends in Fitou, passes through vineyards and garrigue, and offers views of the village of Fitou and the Étangs.
Wine and Local Products
The Caveau de Fitou offers tastings of AOP Fitou and other regional wines; local products such as olive oil, honey, pâtés and tapenades are also available there.
