Culture and village character
On Rue de Belfort, by the washhouse in the village, stands the Borne fontaine de l'enfant au canard. The three-sided decorative cast-iron fountain rests on a stone basin and has two water outlets.
The Moulin de dessus, also known as Moulin de Ferran, is a dilapidated watermill. The Moulin du Roc, also known as Roc del Mouli, is fully operational but currently at a standstill.
Landscape and trails
The Sentier Cathare (GR367) passes through Espezel, which serves as a stage of the route.
The section between Puivert and Comus was changed in 2025 at the level of Espezel and Roquefeuil; trail markings and signs were adjusted accordingly.
The Route des Sapins is a route of around 96 kilometres around the Pays de Sault. It passes through extensive forests, along high-altitude trails and through villages, as well as over passes and through valleys at elevations of 600 to 1,500 metres.
On the excursion route from Espezel to Belvis, there are views of the Tabe Massif with Saint Barthélémy and Soularac, as well as of the Ourtiset.
Mountain-bike circuits around Espezel are listed on the Espace VTT-FFC Aude en Pyrénées map.
From Limoux, Espezel can be reached via the D620 in a southerly direction.
The Ronde des Sapins in Espezel is an 11-kilometre trail run in natural surroundings with an elevation gain of 350 metres; it can also be completed as a hike.
Regional traditions
Espezel's livestock fair includes a food market and gastronomic workshops. It also offers a farmers' market with producers bearing the Pays Cathare brand.
The potato from the Pays de Sault is celebrated every year during the harvest season, from late August to early September.
