The Château de Coustaussa stands on a rocky promontory opposite the ancient town of Rennes-le-Château. In the Middle Ages, the site was an important fortress: it controlled the routes from the Haute Vallée de l’Aude towards the Corbières and Carcassonne and formed part of Carcassonne’s defence system.
Those choosing Coustaussa as a holiday destination will want to rent a holiday apartment.
Culture and history
The Église Saint-Michel contains a protected altarpiece from the main altar with three paintings: Christ on the cross, Saint Michael defeating the dragon and the Virgin Mary.
On 1 November 1897, Abbé Gélis, the parish priest of Coustaussa, was murdered in the kitchen of his presbytery. Légendes d’Oc offers a guided tour in Coustaussa about the unsolved murder of Abbé Gélis.
Landscape
The secured areas of the Château de Coustaussa offer views over the Sals Valley, the Aude Valley and the Plateau du Pech.
