Capendu: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture and History

The chapel of the Château de Capendu includes preserved choir remains and adjoining old sections of wall, which were classified as historic monuments by a decree dated 4 August 1927. Visible remains of the Via Aquitania include road paving behind the cooperative winery and large dressed stone blocks at the Pertuzac site, which locals call “vieux village”.

The Romanesque cemetery chapel had a two-bay nave with a pointed barrel vault and a five-sided apse with a hemispherical vault. Gallo-Roman settlement remains covering an area of around 10 hectares are considered a possible location of Liviana; the identification as Liviana still has to be confirmed by the archaeological authorities.

In Capendu, the Légendr application offers an immersive historical tour about village life during the Second World War. The historical tour with the application begins at the Place de la Mairie. A walk through Capendu’s small streets reveals several sites, including the Chapelle Saint-Martin de Surzac, the Lavoir du Chemin des Pauvres, the Moulin de Patane, as well as the choir remains and wall sections of the former castrum, which are classified as historic monuments.

Nature and Trails

Le Chemin de ronde is an easy, 8.2-kilometre circular hiking trail. It starts and ends at the Place de la Mairie in Capendu, passes through vineyards and woodland sections characterised by oaks and pines, and offers views over the Aude corridor. For Le Chemin de ronde, the Départementale Route 1 between Carcassonne and Narbonne and parking spaces in front of Capendu’s town hall are indicated.

The Nature et Patrimoine en Alaric circular trail runs through the “Corbières occidentales” Natura 2000 site and through the southern part of Capendu’s communal forest managed by the ONF.

At Lac de l'Alaric, there is a botanical educational trail, picnic tables, and a fitness trail that connects the lake to Lac de Barbaira via a loop.

Wine

Les Vignobles de l'Alaric is a winegrowers’ cooperative group with a location in Capendu; its history began in 1976. Caveau Le Terroir offers a wide selection of red, white, and rosé wines, including wines from the union and wines from surrounding estates, sold by the bottle, in 5- or 10-litre wine containers, and directly from the cask.
