Culture and history

In the Regional Natural Park, cultural heritage trails form short, easy loops from village to village. They showcase dry-stone structures, ovens, fountains, washhouses and mills. In Bastia’s old town, the Palais des Gouverneurs is a fortress dating from the 15th and 16th centuries that now houses the Musée de Bastia. The permanent exhibition at the Musée de Bastia is dedicated to seven centuries of the city’s history, as well as the history of Corsica in a broader sense. The Musée de la Corse is a regional anthropological museum about traditional Corsican society, economy and culture. The Citadel of Corte is accessible exclusively via the Musée de la Corse.

Santa Maria della Chjappella is a Romanesque chapel from the late 11th century and has a rare double semicircular apse. In 1990, it was listed as a historic monument. It can be reached via the Sentier Douanier on a 30- to 40-minute walk. The ruins of the Tour de Sainte Marie are part of Corsica’s fortified heritage of Genoese towers. San Tumasgiu de Pastoreccia was classified as a historic monument on February 10, 1923, and is a ten-minute walk from Castellu di u Pinzu.

Other religious buildings reveal different historical layers: San Michele de Castirla is a pre-Romanesque chapel with frescoes from the late 15th century. San Niculaiu de Sermanu is open to visitors and features 15th-century frescoes. San Pantaleone in Gavignanu has decoration on the southern portal dating from the 9th century, as well as 15th-century frescoes. San Quilicu in Cambia has 15th-century frescoes in the apse. Santa Maria Assunta in Favalellu has a 7th-century lintel decorated with a cross.

Hiking and coast

The Crêtes du Cap Corse footpath is 48 kilometres long and intended for experienced hikers. It follows the Serra ridge up to 1,322 metres and offers views from Bastia to Centuri across valleys and the sea. The route is planned to take at least three stages; it is maintained and marked by the Communauté de Communes du Cap Corse.

The coastal path through the Agriate runs for 35 kilometres from Saint-Florent to Ostriconi; reaching Saleccia takes around 5 hours and 45 minutes. Former shepherds’ shelters in Ghignu have been restored as overnight accommodation. The beaches of the Agriate can be reached by boat shuttles or water taxis departing from Saint-Florent; this is subject to seasonal and weather conditions.

Landscape and routes

Castellu di u Pinzu overlooks the Golu Valley. The coast at the tip of Cap Corse belongs to the Conservatoire du Littoral and includes rocks as well as small beaches. The railway line between Ajaccio and Corte climbs to 900 metres and offers views of Corsica’s mountain peaks. The Balagne railway runs along the coast between Calvi and L'Île-Rousse and stops at the beaches between the two towns. Ferry arrivals from the ports of mainland France include Bastia and L'Île-Rousse.

Wine

Terraced vineyards lie around Cap Corse, producing the AOC wines Muscat du Cap Corse and Coteaux du Cap Corse. Balagne’s AOC wine-growing region comprises twelve wineries covering 276 hectares between L'Île-Rousse and Calvi.
