Culture

The Church of Saint-Remi houses a chandelier with crystal pendants, which has been listed as a protected heritage object since 5 December 1977. Esternay was formerly known for its crafts, particularly porcelain and basketry. On the northeastern slope of Esternay, the Raguier brothers built the Château de l’Armée near the outermost part of the Bois de l’Armée.

Lames du Ramu offers a one-day knife-making course during which participants make their own knife. The Lames du Ramu workshop in Esternay makes knives as one-off pieces or in very small series.

History

During the First Battle of the Marne on 5, 6 and 7 September 1914, the IX Corps of the German First Army, commanded by von Klück, occupied the Château d’Esternay and the park for three days.

Nature

The Cyclo-draisines du Grand Morin are a nature activity departing from Esternay and/or Joiselle along a former railway line. They offer three routes that provide a special way to explore the landscapes of the Grand Morin. A rail bike can accommodate a maximum of four people; one adult must accompany each vehicle.

Trails

The hiking trails at the washhouses make it possible to explore the centre of Esternay while discovering its cultural heritage. The Circuit autour d’Esternay is 13 km long and is indicated as taking 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The Circuit d’Esternay-Le-Franc starts at Place du Général de Gaulle by the Church of Saint-Rémi, is 3 km long and marked in red. The Circuit de Viviers also starts at Place du Général de Gaulle by the Church of Saint-Rémi, is 3.5 km long and marked in blue. It passes the Lavoir de l’Étang de l’Aître. On the return journey of the Circuit de Viviers, the Château d’Esternay can be seen.
