Nature
The Jardin Humide is a 3.5-hectare public wetland park in Chouilly. An educational trail focuses on the wetland’s fauna and flora, including birds and the principle behind pike spawning grounds.
The Jardin Humide also offers a wooden walkway for walking or cycling, a viewpoint and picnic facilities on the riverbank.
Trails
The PR 118 and PR 126 hiking trails can be accessed from the Jardin Humide. The 11.2-kilometre circular PR126 Circuit de Chouilly à Saran takes 2 hours and 45 minutes and begins at the Jardin Humide in Chouilly. It follows paths through the vineyards to the Butte de Saran and passes the Romanesque Church of Saint-Martin in Chouilly. The church is the surviving chapel of Chouilly’s former castle, as well as an 11th-century Romanesque building with a 15th-century Gothic extension. The circular route returns to the Jardin Humide via a bridge over the Tarnauds River.
The Boucle de Chouilly (A) passes through the communal vineyard to the Butte de Saran. From there, there are views across the entire valley, particularly towards the Montagne de Reims on the opposite side and the plain to the east.
Culture
The Jardin de vignes is an open-air museum showcasing vine-training methods and approved pruning techniques used in Champagne. It uses fully grown vines and educational panels to explain Champagne’s viticulture. The Jardin de vignes also includes a miniature Champagne vineyard and calcicolous plants.
