Chevières: Holiday Apartments and Houses

The Grande Traversée de l’Argonne follows a 100-kilometre marked route through the landscape for hiking, trail running or mountain biking. It mainly follows the GR 14; its Grandpré–Châtel-Chéhéry stage approaches Chevières.

The GR 14 also passes through the village: the section from Harricourt to Apremont-sur-Aire runs via Grandpré and then through Chevières.

Nature

Chevières is part of the Natura 2000 site FR2112006 “Confluence des vallées de l'Aisne et de l'Aire”, which is designated as a special protection area for birds.

The Grandpré–Châtel-Chéhéry stage of the Grande Traversée de l’Argonne approaches Chevières via a white rural track through a varied landscape of forest and open terrain.

The Côte de Châtillon hill is located in the vicinity of Chevières.

The Fontaine aux Charmes spring and Mont Cuvelet hill are also located nearby.

Routes and activities

The section of the GR 14 from Mont-Dieu to Apremont-sur-Aire is 40 kilometres long; the stated walking time is around nine hours.

The section of the GR 14 passing through Chevières bears the red-and-white markings of the Fédération Française de Randonnée Pédestre. It leads through forest ponds, villages and places shaped by the battles of the First World War.

The Route d’Artagnan is certified as a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe and comprises more than 8,000 kilometres of riding trails.

The Route d’Artagnan also passes through Chevières; it can be explored on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by carriage.

History and culture

The Mémorial Hamilton Coolidge marks the place where the American aviator Hamilton Coolidge was killed on 27 October 1918 during an aerial battle over Chevières.

On 15 September 2024, the Église Saint-Martin in Chevières was the site of the reburial ceremony for Captain Hamilton Coolidge. Hamilton Coolidge was a descendant of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, and a close friend of Quentin Roosevelt.

The historic sites Abbaye Notre-Dame de Chéhéry and Abbaye des Rosiers are located in the vicinity of Chevières.

In the wider regional area are the ancient site Le Chateau, the historic site Abbaye de Belval-Bois-des-Dames and the Le Paradis hill.
