Culture and history

The parish church of Saint-Martin-en-Bresse was rebuilt between 1834 and 1837. It houses the 1835 painting “La charité de Saint Martin” by Césaire Quillier after Anton Van Dyck; the work was listed as protected on 23 August 1995. The parish church also contains the 1602 painting “Le Christ et la femme adultère” by André Menassier, which was listed as protected on 24 April 1961.

The preserved Chapelle de Bellefond dates from the 14th century and is built of red bricks. In La Madeleine, a memorial commemorating the tragedy of 8 and 9 March 1944 was erected from the stones of the burned-down houses. The ruins of a Maison de lune can still be seen in the hamlet of La Madeleine.

The trail passes through the heritage of Saint-Martin-en-Bresse and brings the 19th-century church, with its remarkable neo-Gothic style and stained-glass windows, as well as the former railway station, now gone, to life as a former transport hub between the Bresse and Chalon-sur-Saône.
