Culture and History
The Cinéma Les Variétés in Montchanin was built in 1921 and opened on 24 September 1921 with 719 seats. The parish church was built in 1846–1847 by the Société des Houillères de Montchanin. In 1854, it became the parish church when the municipality of Montchanin-les-Mines was established. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and it is built from Belgian bricks.
The Henri-Paul Foundry was built by the Etablissements Schneider du Creusot from June 1918 onwards; the first casting took place on 19 June 1920. The cast-iron foundry comprises five bays, while the bronze foundry and the storage and changing building each comprise three. Several richly decorated houses associated with the Grande Tuilerie de Bourgogne can be seen in Montchanin’s station district.
Water and Trails
The Bois-Brétoux port and landing site includes a quay, a house, a workshop, a former river channel, a tugboat, a boat and a crane. For cyclists, EuroVelo 6 includes a designated section from Montchanin to Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune.
The hiking route in Montchanin includes the Marais du Pont des Morands, with a 1.5 km educational trail for exploring the local wildlife and plant life. In addition, the hiking route “Sur les traces d’un passé entre terre et eau (MCH)” is listed as a 16 km moderately difficult tour lasting four hours; the stated times are not guaranteed today.
Railway
Montchanin is served by Le Creusot TGV station on the Paris–Lyon LGV Sud-Est high-speed line. Montchanin station is located on the railway line from Nevers to Chagny.
