Mazille: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Nature and Trails

Mazille features green hills and hiking trails that lead through meadows and forests. The “Balade en forêt des Trois Monts” hike leads from the centre of Mazille into the Trois Monts forest, which provides a protected habitat for game, wild boar and deer. The Fontaine Cébée and its spring are located along the trail in the forest; the spring supplied the village with drinking water for many years.

Anyone planning a stay in Mazille may wish to rent a holiday apartment there.

Culture and History

Saint-Blaise is a Romanesque church dating from the early 12th century, probably built by the master builders of Abbot Hugues de Cluny. It stands near the remains of a Roman villa and belonged to Cluny Abbey. The cemetery surrounding Saint-Blaise contains the tomb stele of Michel Bouillot (1929–2007).

The Doyenné des Moines was formerly a dependency of the Benedictines of Cluny Abbey. It stands on a rocky spur above the centre of the village and includes, among other features, a 13th-century chapel.

Visiting

The privately owned Doyenné des Moines can be visited daily from 10 July to 10 September, except Wednesdays, from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., as well as during the Journées du Patrimoine. Groups may visit in spring and summer by prior arrangement.

Saint-Blaise can be visited outside the times of religious services. The restoration work carried out on Saint-Blaise in 2016 included drainage for the church and improved access by reopening an old door at choir level south of the bell tower.

Architecture and Spirituality

The Carmel de la Paix is a work built in the 1970s by the Spanish architect Jean-Louis Sert, a pupil of Le Corbusier, and bears the designation “Patrimoine du XXe siècle”. At the Carmel de la Paix, visitors can share in part of the life, prayer and work of the Carmelite nuns.

Cuisine

La Belle Étoile in the centre of Mazille offers convivial cuisine inspired by mountain flavours.
