History
The historic centre of Le Tartre developed around a castle overlooking the Seille. The castle of Le Tartre was destroyed in 1793; today, a motte measuring 12 metres on each side and 4 metres high is all that remains of the former castle.
The tower of Saint Michael’s Church was thatched in 1870. The chapel built near the castle by the lords of Le Tartre became the village church in 1648.
The seigneurial mill stood on a diversion of the Seille approximately 1 kilometre long. In 1806, it had nine mill drives, including four paddle-wheel drives and five bucket-wheel drives. The Pont de Gommerand dates from 1905.

Nature
In the Seille Valley upstream from Louhans, a natural area stretches from Saint-Usuge to Le Tartre. It encompasses six municipalities and covers an area of 1,045 hectares.
Walking Trails
The easy “Les champs de la Seille” walking trail starting in Le Tartre is 5.2 kilometres long. It begins at Le Tartre Town Hall, follows the Seille along the edge of the Sottessard and Jousseau hamlets, then crosses the plain before returning to the starting point.
