The ZNIEFF Ruisseaux de Villeneuve et du Breuil nature reserve includes Igornay as one of its administrative municipalities. The bullhead (Cottus gobio) and the Planer's lamprey (Lampetra planeri) occur in this area as species of European interest.

Within the ZNIEFF area, the Ruisseau du Breuil flows through a small granite valley surrounded by bocage pastureland. The northern half of Igornay also includes the Bois du Grand-Bessay, a hilly forest that descends steeply towards the Arroux and the narrow valley of the Ruisseau de Velleneuve.

Culture and History

The Église Saint-Symphorien was built between 1840 and 1844 and contains religious sculptures. A Roman road from Autun to Langres forms Igornay's south-eastern boundary; today, it is a country lane.

The Château d'Igornay preserves remains from the 13th and 14th centuries in its northern towers, including loopholes. The residential buildings were fitted with ogee-arched openings in the 15th and 16th centuries. The remains of the Château d'Igornay are visible north of the D26, on the left bank of the Arroux in a river bend.

Getting There and Surroundings

From Autun, Igornay can be reached via the N81 towards Arnay-le-Duc. After Cordesse and the level crossing on the Autun–Saulieu railway line, the D26 leads to the centre of Igornay.

Nearby, the Vélorail du Morvan starts at Gare de Cordesse - Igornay station in Cordesse. It offers a 2-hour-and-15-minute journey along the former railway line that connected Autun, Saulieu and Avallon with Paris until 2011.
