The Maison du Patrimoine presents the exhibition “De la pierre à l’œuvre”, which describes the geology of Fontaines and the history of its quarries. The quarries of Fontaines were already being worked in Gallo-Roman times. The Visite des carrières de Fontaines offers a guided tour that recalls the history of the quarry workers and stonecutters who worked there.
Numerous springs in Fontaines feed fountains, washhouses and livestock troughs before their water flows into the Thalie.
The Chemin des calvaires begins in Fontaines, is a 7.8 km circular route and includes 11 points of interest. It is a very easy hiking trail with a stated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. The Saint-Nicolas wayside cross on the Chemin des calvaires is an 18th-century wayside cross; on one side it depicts Christ wearing the crown of thorns and on the other, the Virgin and Child.
The cycling tour “Au fil du Canal du Centre… à vélo” also leads to Fontaines on its third stage. For this, cyclists leave the cycle path for a few hours and ride into the village to discover its historical heritage.
