Several circular trails provide access to the surrounding area. The circular trail Autour du Puits Hottinguer is 6.2 kilometres long and passes over the Gué de Champy footbridge, along the Promenade de Barlibeau and via the Chemin de Monestoy. En passant par Grandvaux is 11.1 kilometres long and follows the botanical trail through the Bois de Mollaire to Grandvaux.
The 10.9-kilometre circular trail La chapelle de Montartaux climbs to the hamlet of Ressille, from where the Chapelle de Montartaux can be seen. Another 9.5-kilometre circular trail leads to the sites of the ten most important former mine shafts in the former Épinac-les-mines area. Thanks to explanatory signs, this circular trail can be followed independently all year round on foot, by mountain bike or by car.
Nature and Water
The Fontaine Bonhomme nature trail is a marked botanical trail in the Bois de Mollaire. Families can discover the forest’s flora and fauna there. Fishing is possible on the Drée and its tributaries, the Petite Drée and the Miette.
There is also a leisure facility beside the Drée with miniature golf, children’s play equipment, table football and table tennis.
Culture and History
The Chapelle de la Garenne was built between 1866 and 1869 by the Compagnie du Chemin de fer et des Houillères d’Épinac for its employees and, in particular, for the settlement’s private school. The brick chapel is located in the heart of the Cité de la Garenne and has remarkable stained-glass windows.
The Puits Hottinguer is a central testament to the mining industry. The shaft reaches a depth of 618 metres and is considered one of the deepest shafts in France. To protect the headframe and winding engine, a tower inspired by the German Malakow tower type was built between 1872 and 1876. The Puits Hottinguer is accessible all year round.
In the Battées forest near Épinac stands the Val Saint Benoît monastery, founded by Gauthier de Sully in 1236. The church of the monastery near Épinac has proportions reminiscent of Cistercian abbeys. The Chapelle de Dinay may date from around the year 1000.
The Musée de la Mine, de la Verrerie et du Chemin de Fer covers the topics of history, industry and minerals. The former railway line became the Promenade de Monestoy in 1992. Reservations for the Musée, the Maison Sœurotte and an escape game are accepted at reservation@epinacmusee.fr.
