Digoin: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Pont-canal de Digoin is a 243-metre-long masonry bridge with 11 arches. It was built from 1832 to 1836 so that the Canal latéral à la Loire could cross the Loire. The Pont-canal can be accessed on foot, by bicycle or by pleasure boat.

Water

The Canal du Centre and the Canal latéral à la Loire share a four-kilometre-long section in Digoin between Le Paradis and Port Campionnet. The GUICHARD-CAMPIONNET marina accommodates all types of river craft and can receive 40 to 50 boats per day.

The Bateau Ville de Digoin offers one- or one-and-a-half-hour guided cruises. These cover the Pont-canal de Digoin, the operation of locks, the history of the canals and inland navigation, as well as the flora and fauna. Private trips on the Bateau Volnay allow visitors to learn canal manoeuvres and steering, pass through locks and cross the Pont-canal, which runs more than 12 metres above the Loire.

The Canal de Roanne à Digoin offers opportunities for pleasure boating, hiking, cycling, fishing and observing flora and fauna.

Nature

ObservaLoire offers a panoramic view of more than 180 degrees of the Pont-canal and the Loire from a glazed gallery. Provided binoculars enable visitors to observe the flora and fauna of the Loire region. The permanent exhibition rooms focus on the underwater world, the Marine de Loire, and the Loire and its canals; there is also a room for temporary exhibitions. ObservaLoire is dedicated to the Loire, its fish, river navigation and the canals.

The Dompierre-sur-Besbre–Diou–Digoin Greenway runs for just under 30 kilometres between the Loire and the Canal latéral à la Loire and ends at the Digoin lock near a Pont-canal. The Pont-Levis Digoin is one of the last surviving metal drawbridges and is located on the Greenway, which can be used on foot or by bicycle.

Culture

The Manufacture de Digoin was founded in 1875 and produces everyday items for the garden and household. A bookable guided tour of the Manufacture de Digoin allows visitors to follow every stage of production, meet the craftspeople and discover the heritage passed down for more than 150 years.

The Musée de la Céramique de Digoin is housed in a building dating from 1742 and contains around 8,000 objects in 14 rooms. The tour ranges from a Gallo-Roman kiln from the 2nd century through Digoin’s production since 1770 to manufacturing and decoration techniques.

The Église Notre-Dame de la Providence in Digoin is a Romanesque-Byzantine church whose construction began in 1869. The sculpted tympana on the façade depict, among other scenes, the Wedding at Cana and the disciples on the road to Emmaus. The Église Sainte-Bernadette in Digoin is a major work by architect Pierre Bernard and is distinguished by its innovative use of reinforced concrete.
