Nature and trails
The Circuit de la Montagne begins and ends at the Pont de la Ferdière car park in Brandon. It follows a ridge path that is shared with the GR76, the Way of St. James routes, and the Way of Assisi. At the Croix Berthier, hikers can look out over Saint-Point and the Valouzin valley. Notable natural features along the Circuit de la Montagne include the bocage landscape and the forest.
The “Balade des Hauts de Brandon” is classified as easy. Hiking route BR1, “Balade des Hauts de Brandon,” is listed as 5.4 km long.
Townscape and history
The centre of Brandon consists largely of very old, typical Burgundian houses. The lanes in the centre run between dry-stone walls.
The parish church of Saint Pancrace in Brandon has been documented since the 10th century; at that time, it was dedicated to Saint Martin. The present church is predominantly Gothic and was extensively remodelled in the 19th century on the foundations of a 12th-century building. It is distinguished by a formally designed neo-Romanesque west portal.
The washhouse in Les Cours was built in 1893 from stones provided by the inhabitants. The fountain and washhouse in the Bourg were built in 1870.
On the route near the cemetery, a Christianised megalith marks a crossroads. Along the route, a carved head can be discovered in a reused stone in the centre of Brandon. The route passes through the centre of Brandon, where hikers can see the trough of the fountain dating from 1870.
La Tour d’Avout
La Tour d’Avout consists of the ruins of a large square tower on the summit of Avout Hill. The ruins can now be reached via a small private path.
