Culture and History

The covered market halls of Vitteaux were designated as a historic monument by decree of 28 February 1964. Nine monuments in Vitteaux are listed in the register of historic monuments.

The Camp de Myard bears evidence of significant human settlement from the 4th to the 9th millennium BC. The visible remains of the settlement include a fortification with five towers; the site has been designated as a historic monument since 22 January 2004.

The Église Saint-Germain was founded in the 11th century and rebuilt in 1180. It is distinguished by its twisted bell tower and houses an altarpiece painted by Nicolas de Hoey in 1592.

The Chapelle de la Trinité was built in 1592 on the banks of the Brenne in the ruelle Ferrand.

A distinctive feature of the town is the nocturnal shadow and light artwork created by Christian Boltanski in Vitteaux. It disappears during the day and appears at dusk along the ruelle Ferrand, behind the tourist office, at the Brenne and on the rue Portelle.
