The Vallon de l’Abbaye de Fontenay is designated as a classified natural site and also includes areas in Touillon. The publicly accessible Vallon has landscaped hiking trails. In the Vallon de l’Abbaye de Fontenay, the water from its source at the foot of the village of Touillon to Fontenay Abbey was managed through a series of small basins and ponds.
For tourist visitors, there are two picnic areas and a car park that were set up for this purpose. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Touillon plans their stay with Touillon as their destination.
Hiking
The “Vallon de Fontenay” route is designated as a moderately difficult trail measuring 11.5 km. It starts at the car park on Touillon’s village square and runs along the Ruisseau de Fontenay, passing former ponds.
Culture and history
At Étang de la Roche, the upper level of the dovecote contains 290 nesting niches. The Church of Saint-Fiacre is decorated with 19th-century murals. It also has a porch with four columns added in the 19th century and a bell tower completely covered with slate.
The large square tower is the only surviving remnant of Touillon’s episcopal fortified castle. The castle later served as a residence for the bishops of Autun; at the end of the 15th century, it was used as an episcopal prison.
