Culture and History
The main construction phases of the Saint-Germain-d'Auxerre church in Monthelie date from the 12th and 14th centuries. Since 31 October 1991, the church has been classified as a Monument historique.
The Château de Monthelie features construction phases from the 16th century and the third quarter of the 18th century, including a construction phase from 1746. The château is partially listed as a Monument historique. The protection covers the façades and roofs of the 18th-century château, the 16th-century building, the eastern outbuildings, and a square tower with a spiral staircase.
Monthelie and its wine-growing region were under the control of Cluny Abbey from the 10th to the 15th century. Since 21 November 2007, Monthelie has been part of the European network of Cluniac sites. The Romanesque Saint-Germain church in Monthelie is a Cluniac site.
Winegrowing
Domaine Eric de Suremain at the Château de Monthelie is a family-run business in Monthelie that manages around 10 hectares of vineyards in the Monthelie, Monthelie Premier Cru and Rully Premier Cru appellations. By prior appointment, the domaine offers on-site wine tastings for groups of 1 to 15 people.
Trails and Events
The 13-kilometre, yellow-marked Sentier des Buis trail passes through Monthelie, Meursault and Auxey-Duresses. At the Printemps de Monthelie, visitors can meet winegrowers and taste vintages in cellars and wineries. Hiking trail no. 14 in the Pays Beaunois runs through the Côte de Beaune.
