Messanges lies at the foothills of the wooded Plateau de Myon, whose landscape is typical of the Val de Vergy. Those who choose Messanges as a destination can plan to rent a holiday apartment there.
Nature
The Meuzin forms the eastern municipal boundary of Messanges. The northern slopes of the Plateau de Myon are home to ravine forests where Actée en épi, a plant described as rare in Burgundy, can be found.
The Combe de Roche is an incised hollow with wooded slopes. In spring, flowering oxeye daisies, meadow sage, yellow rattle and knapweed attract numerous insect species there. The wooded hill of Mantuan on the outskirts of Messanges is considered an important reservoir of biodiversity. Fire salamanders can also be observed in Messanges.
Culture and History
The Moulin Chevalier presents traditional flour-making machinery on four levels and across 950 m² and is set up as an ecomuseum of milling. At the Moulin Chevalier, the Meuzin and the miller's craft are explained using the hydraulic system with its inlet channel, overflow, sluice gate, waterwheel and turbine.
The Moulin Chevalier offers unguided or guided tours, events, a shop and exhibitions. It was open on the weekends of the Heritage Days on the fourth weekend of June and the third weekend of September, as well as for groups by reservation.
The Croix du Moulin in Messanges is a more than four-metre-high Calvary cross engraved with religious and astronomical symbols. Messanges is home to a former village washhouse. There are also two beekeeper's walls, or traditional walls for apiaries. Next to the mairie-école stands the tower of a round stone dovecote with approximately 400 square nesting openings.
Geographical Location
East of the village, the RD 35 crosses Messanges from north to south.
