Maconge combines a detail from ecclesiastical history with the history of water engineering along the Canal de Bourgogne. The parish church of Sainte-Anne, formerly called Saint-Gengoux, dates from the late 15th or early 16th century. On the rear wall of its choir is a carved coat of arms bearing the arms of Richard de La Palud and Philiberte de Rye. The front of the main altar features a relief depicting the Last Supper.

Culture and History

Historical references can also be found on the gable of the hydroelectric plant: it bears the year of construction, 1893, and a carved depiction of a dynamo in bas-relief. The hydroelectric plant on the Canal de Bourgogne was built in 1893 to supply the electrical energy required for the towing system established by François-Marie Galliot.

At Port d'Escommes, a barge with a winch system has been preserved. This was used to reduce the draught of barges and facilitate their passage through the tunnel with the toueur.

Water Landscape

At the Escommes basin, water from the Chazilly reservoir enters the canal through a 7.6-kilometre-long feeder channel. The Rigole de Beaume crosses Maconge; the section passing through the village was restored in 1893. The Rigole de Chazilly also crosses Maconge and subsequently feeds the canal at the summit level on the right bank of the Escommes basin.

Port d'Escommes has a rectangular basin. Port de plaisance Escommes is a marina with services for water sports enthusiasts.

Hiking

The “Par rigoles et Canal de Bourgogne” hiking route is 18.85 kilometres long, moderately difficult, and has an average duration of 5 hours and 35 minutes. It follows the canal to Port d'Escommes and then continues to Maconge. On the route, the church of Maconge is listed at kilometre 17.42 as point 15.
