Nature

The ZNIEFF “RESERVOIR, BOCAGE ET BOIS DE CERCEY ET CHATELLENOT” in Essey consists mainly of mesophilic meadows and deciduous forests surrounding a balancing reservoir of the Burgundy Canal. The reservoir features submerged and floating vegetation, reed beds with flowering rush (Butomus umbellatum), tall-herb vegetation along the water’s edge, and pioneer grassland on drying shoreline areas.

The Armançon rises north of Essey at the Puits d’Autagny at the Pointe des Maillys. The spring is marked by a square stone basin. The wider surrounding area also includes Saint-Beury Hill and Mont Tasselot Hill.

Culture

The former Château de Villeneuve is now a specialized educational centre and replaced a medieval fortified house. The present château appears to have been built at the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th century. It is surrounded by a wide moat, crossed on the south side by a fixed bridge.

The Église Saint-Germain is located on Rue de l'Église, 21320 Essey. It was built in the 13th century and preserves trefoil-shaped windows that illuminate some wall paintings.

Archaeology

The archaeological site of Fagny, or Fogny, included settlements and a presumed Gallo-Roman fanum. A mosaic approximately twenty metres long was uncovered there. In addition, a mother goddess on a cart drawn by two horses came to light in 1848.

The historic Châteauneuf Castle is located near Essey. The wider surrounding area also includes the Abbaye Notre-Dame de la Bussière, a monastery, Coraboeuf Castle, and Château de Blaisy-Haut.
