At the Château d’Époisses, the exterior, gardens and dovecote can be visited year-round from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Église Saint-Symphorien is located in the inner courtyard of the Château d’Époisses. It dates from the 12th century, and its bell tower was raised in the 15th century. Four towers were built at the Château d’Époisses in the 13th century for protection, including the keep.
Cuisine
Époisses cheese was awarded AOC status in 1991 and AOP status in 1996. Its history can be traced back to the 16th century; it was first produced in a community of Cistercian monks near the village of Époisses. During its production, Époisses cheese is washed one to three times a week with water that is gradually enriched with Marc de Bourgogne, and it matures for four to eight weeks.
A cheese tasting is available in the dining room of the Château d’Époisses for groups of 12 or more.
Activities
The “Soupe de la sorcière” in Époisses is a free family discovery trail that can be completed at any time. The 3-kilometre trail is suitable for children aged five and over. On the discovery trail, a map, hidden wooden markers and a recipe card are used to uncover information and clues about the places along the route at the various stations.
