Culture and History

The history of the village dates back to its development at the crossroads of two ancient Roman roads. In the Middle Ages, Argilly became known for its terracotta craftsmanship. West of the settlement stood a Gallo-Roman villa that served as a Merovingian necropolis.

The basilica church of Argilly has been listed as a historic monument since 1927. The village’s history also includes a château with fourteen towers, which the Dukes of Burgundy restored and embellished.

The Moulin du dessus was later called Moulin d’Archiac and is now known as Moulin du Coq; it is one of Argilly’s former watermills.

Village Character

Argilly’s largest washhouse has sluice gates, two levels with washboards and a fireplace. Several benches stand in the church square. Parking is available north and west of the church square.

Argilly has a direct connection to Beaune, Nuits-Saint-Georges and the surrounding villages.
