Arcenant: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture and History

The Site gallo-romain de l'Écartelot includes a sanctuary. From Arcenant, the site can be reached via a 3 km-long heritage trail; a 400 m-long marked footpath leads there from the car park on the D18.

The Eglise Saint-Martin in Arcenant features grotesque representations and an equestrian statue, “la Charité de Saint Martin”, and is classified as a Cluniac site. Its late-19th-century sanctuary is completely decorated with unusually rare wall frescoes. The nave, dating from the mid-19th century, bears marks left by the compagnons.

The Prieuré d'Arcenant was founded in 1188 by monks from the Abbey of Saint-Vivant, which was subordinate to the mother abbey of Cluny. The buildings of the Prieuré visible today date from 1724. Guided tours with commentary convey the history of the site and its role in the region’s monastic and wine-growing organisation.

The former maquis from the Second World War period in the communal forest of Arcenant is marked by a memorial plaque.
