Chauvigné: Granite Trails, Bocage Landscape and Village History

Nature

Starting from Boismine, the Circuit de Saint-Georges overlooks a valley through which the Minette and Ritort rivers flow. The Circuit de Saint-Georges passes by the Château de la Maison Neuve. The private estate dates from the 19th century and can be viewed from the trail.

The municipality of Chauvigné has numerous walking trails; the Circuit des Rochers is one of two signposted circular routes. It passes through the granite country of Chauvigné, where granite is visible in meadows and traditional buildings. The combination of route length, difficulty rating and stated duration provides an objective basis for planning the day.

In the village of La Moisondaie, the Circuit de Saint-Georges passes a historic bakehouse (fournil), part of the local small-scale heritage. Culture

Notre-Dame Church has been mentioned since the 11th century and preserves Romanesque architectural remains in its nave and apse. Its ground plan is in the shape of a Latin cross with a single nave; the building is constructed of granite masonry.

Notre-Dame Church was altered in the 15th century, the 16th century and in 1654. It contains a collection of 16 tomb slabs; some of them came from the Saint-Georges Chapel, which was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century.

History

As a tributary of the Couesnon, the Minette once powered mills between La Sourde and Boismine for centuries, producing wheat flour, buckwheat flour and paper.

At the former Saint-Georges cemetery, a cross standing in the village marks the site. In the village of Fretay, the buildings, particularly a house with a turret, are considered worth seeing. Near the village of Fretay, quarries for blue granite operated in the 1920s, including at the Rochers des Renaisières site.
