Early Traces
Camlez preserves notable evidence of a long history of settlement. The Menhir du Launay is one of the megaliths attesting to the Neolithic settlement of Camlez. Standing 4 metres high, it is also a striking stone landmark of the area.
Among Camlez’s historic earthworks, alongside the Motte féodale de Croas-Husto, there is a second motte féodale near Kerham. The medieval Motte féodale de Croas-Husto in Convennat-an-Dossen dates from the 10th or 11th century and takes the form of a circular truncated cone.
Landscape
Camlez consists predominantly of a plateau with little pronounced relief. Its elevation ranges from 20 metres at Pont Neuf to 107 metres at Rhun. The underlying rock is mainly coarse-grained granite from Port-Blanc.
Churches and Stone
The parish church of Saint-Trémeur was built in a very clearly restrained Neo-Gothic style, with large interior volumes and no exterior decoration. The cemetery enclosure and the church’s main entrance come from the Château de Kerham, whose gallery comprises four round-arched arcades.
The Chapelle Saint-Nicolas was rebuilt in 1824 and houses statues of Saint Nicholas and the Virgin Mary. Another stone monument is Voute Soleil, a granite element dating from the 15th century.
Out and About
The Circuit des Vieilles Pierres is an easy, signposted 16-kilometre circular trail through Camlez and neighbouring municipalities. Saint-Trémeur Church can be visited free of charge throughout the year; the keys are available from the town hall.
