Culture and History
Notre-Dame-de-L’Assomption is the main church of Lamayou, near the town hall, and dates from 1874. It houses four 17th-century sculptures depicting the Evangelists.
The history of the place is also evident around Mongaston. The Chemin de la Chourrote connects Mongaston with Lamayou’s church district and crosses the Chourrote gorge beside old livestock watering troughs. Mongaston has a motte surrounded by ditches and served Fébus as a hunting base. The place was also transformed into a castelnau grouped around the Sainte-Madeleine chapel. The former lay abbey that gave the village its name was located 450 metres to the northeast.
Paths and Landscape
The Boucle de Lamayou is a moderately difficult, 10-kilometre circular route with access via the car park at the town hall. The Lamayou loop passes close to the ruins of the Samonzet chapel.
The La Lande section combines nature and cultivated land; there are trees, flowers and animals, and the Pyrenees can be seen on the horizon.
