Saint-Justin: Holiday apartments and houses

Saint-Justin combines a bastide founded in 1280 with Romanesque and Gothic religious architecture, as well as paths through forests and countryside.

History and architecture

The bastide of Saint-Justin was founded in 1280 by the Vicomtesse du Marsan and the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem. Three octagonal defensive towers remain from its historic fortifications. The heritage trail through Saint-Justin is marked with signs explaining the town’s history.

The Église Saint André has a Gothic nave with slightly pointed ribbed vaults dating from the 14th century. Its stained-glass windows are attributed to the two renowned stained-glass dynasties Mauméjean and Gesta.

The Chapelle Sainte-Quitterie d'Argelouse is a Romanesque chapel from the 12th century with a Gothic nave. In 2011, it was closed to the public due to a municipal danger order.

Nature and trails

The Parc de Fondat is protected as a historic garden under the Monuments Historiques designation. It is home to a zelkova conservatory, including Gulliver, which is recognised as an Arbre Remarquable de France.

The Airial de Douzevielle is located in the Douzevielle district of Saint-Justin, a natural site with lawns and oak trees that stand out from the surrounding Landes de Gascogne. A walking loop through the district passes meadows, cultivated fields, vineyards, forests and ponds before reaching Saint-Justin. The Circuit de Douzevielle is closed.

The Circuit de Claouzet starts in Saint-Justin and is an easy 7.9-kilometre circular hike. It follows forest tracks and is suitable for hiking or mountain biking.

Local life and gastronomy

Held annually on 1 May, the Foire de Saint-Justin offers strawberries, asparagus, new vegetables and flowers. In Saint-Justin, Bas-Armagnac brandies are also combined with the cuisine of Gascony.
