Martignas-Sur-Jalle: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

La Jalle has been designated a Natura 2000 site since 2000. Camp de Souge is designated as a type 2 ZNIEFF and includes significant areas of Atlantic wet heathland. Camp de Souge encompasses 2,855 hectares of natural habitats described as an ecological conservation area and is among the last remaining original Atlantic wet heaths in Gascony.

Nature

Notable species found at Camp de Souge include the marsh azure, large copper, European nightjar, European pond turtle and intermediate sundew. In Martignas-sur-Jalle, La Jalle is a river area suitable for walking.

Getting Around

The Promenades arborées martignassaises are a municipal network of walking routes for exploring Martignas-sur-Jalle. The routes can be completed on foot or by bicycle; the municipality provides a downloadable map for this purpose. A footpath has also been created along the wetlands of La Jalle, guiding walkers along a designated route.

At the Moulin Bidon site, there are paths with wooden walkways through the wetlands. There is also a picnic area, two skittles lanes, a large draughts board and an exhibition on biodiversity. Jalle Astronomie offers stargazing and astrophotography using equipment provided by the club; since 2015, access to the observatory on the Plaine Colette-Besson has been available.

Culture

The Galerie d’Art Claude-Monet displays works by painters, sculptors and photographers from the region at weekends. The Moulin Bidon site is named after a former watermill belonging to the Bidon family.

The Souge Memorial was erected in 1998 by the Association du Souvenir des Fusillés de Souge. It has a wooded path with steles listing the names, first names and ages of the victims according to the date of their execution. During visits to the Souge Memorial, the history of the executions, the various groups and those executed is presented at the corresponding steles.

Orientation

Access to the Souge Memorial is arranged through the Association and is only possible with the army’s approval. Within the municipality of Martignas-sur-Jalle, the Avenue de la Résistance followed by the Avenue du 57ème RI are indicated as the route to Camp de Souge.
