Urbès: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

During the Second World War, the unfinished Tunnel d'Urbès served German armaments production and became an external camp of the Natzwiller-Struthof concentration camp. Visitors can now learn about the entrance to the Tunnel d'Urbès and its history via an educational trail.

Culture

The parish church of Saint-Wendelin was begun in 1847 and consecrated in October 1847. It includes a bell-tower porch built from sandstone blocks, as well as a rendered nave and a rendered chancel constructed of masonry. The parish church also has an organ by Joseph Callinet.

Nature

Lake d'Urbès is a type 1 ZNIEFF area covering 73 hectares and located at an altitude of between 435 and 460 metres. It is based on a deposit of lake sediment and peat that has existed for more than 10,000 years; a moraine is responsible for the lake's formation.

Surroundings

Château du Friedberg is located in the surroundings of Urbès and is considered a castle. Nearby are Huselberg, Bergenbach, Maerelberg and Baerenberg, each of which is considered a mountain. Château du Wildenstein, Château de Freundstein and Château d'Engelbourg are also located in the surroundings and are each considered a ruin.

Cuisine

The Ferme-auberge du Gustiberg offers a marcaire menu, regional specialities such as Fleischschnackas, and fruit tart as well as fromage blanc with blueberries for dessert. The Ferme-auberge du Gustiberg includes 36 hectares of high-altitude pasture; the agricultural holding in Urbès also comprises 34 hectares of meadows.

Things to Do

The return leg of the Le circuit du Gustiberg VTT FFC n°24 mountain-bike loop passes through Urbès. There is an interpretation trail at Lake d'Urbès; activities for exploring the area are limited.
