Saint-Louis was founded in 1684 by Louis XIV and named after him. The town is located at the tripoint of Switzerland, Germany and France and therefore has a unique transport network, which includes the EuroAirport.

History

The railway reached Saint-Louis in 1840. The parish church of Saint-Louis was built in 1842 by Auguste Hummel. It replaced a chapel built in 1751, which in turn had replaced the first chapel built around 1684.

Culture

The Fondation Fernet-Branca is located in the former Fernet-Branca distillery in Saint-Louis. The distillery building was constructed between 1907 and 1909. The Fondation’s monumental façade is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. On 1,500 m² of exhibition space, the Fondation presents temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, including solo and group exhibitions.

The former Danzas company was founded in Saint-Louis by Louis Danzas in 1816. Cité Danzas is located in the last historic building of the former Danzas company. It houses workshops for arts and crafts and rare craft techniques; craftspeople and artists work there. On occasions such as the European Heritage Days, the European Artistic Crafts Days and its pre-Christmas creative market, Cité Danzas opens its doors to the public.

Lambda Escape in Saint-Louis offers escape-room scenarios for teams of 2 to 6 people, with 60 minutes to solve the puzzles. Megazone in Saint-Louis includes the 1,000 m² indoor play area Megakid’s, with a trampoline, mini-karting, toboggan run and zip line. Megazone also offers an immersive laser game in a maze covering more than 650 m², fully themed as a futuristic spaceship.

Le Five Saint-Louis offers small-sided football, padel, squash, badminton and a golf simulator; equipment can be rented on site.

Nature

The Au wetland is home to around a hundred breeding bird species and an equal number of migratory bird species that stop there to rest. It contains significant aquatic flora typical of the Rhine floodplain marshes, particularly around 15 orchid species.
