Pfaffenheim: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Notre-Dame du Schauenberg pilgrimage chapel is located at Schauenberg in Pfaffenheim; it is listed as a historic monument. The Marian pilgrimage at Schauenberg developed at the beginning of the 15th century. The present-day chapel corresponds to a 17th-century structure with a single-nave hall and a choir with a flat-ended northern wall.

Culture

Pfaffenheim is home to numerous Renaissance patrician houses. Magnificent towers with staircases made of hewn stone have been preserved; this is associated with what was presumably a thriving wine trade.

The “Sentier Vignoble et Spiritualité” circular trail begins at Pfaffenheim town hall and leads to the Saint-Léonard Chapel and the Teufelstein, whose name means “Devil’s Stone”. As a circular trail, it is moderately difficult and takes two hours.

Trails and landscape

The “Grand Cru Steinert” promenade is 3.3 kilometres long and is accompanied by information panels about vines, wine and cultural heritage. It leads through Pfaffenheim’s vineyard and to the Grand Cru Steinert. The promenade is open year-round and offers panoramic views over the Alsatian plain and the surrounding wine villages.

Getting around

The sanctuary at Schauenberg can be reached by car via a forest road. A car park is located 300 metres from the sanctuary; there is also a car park near the chapel for people with reduced mobility.

Pfaffenheim is served by a regular bus and/or tram service.
