Culture and History
The Saint-Wolfgang Chapel still welcomes the faithful for masses and processions today. It has a coffered ceiling made up of 21 panels. In the new Saint-Michel Church, a stained-glass window depicts Chapter 12 of the Revelation of John.
The history of the buildings also includes their former uses and structural changes. The former vicarage of Kappelen was built in 1746 according to plans by Blaise von Runcz. The former Saint-Michel Chapel was converted into a church in 1847 by extending the nave by 9 metres. The former Saint-Michel Church was deconsecrated in 1977; its nave has served as a community room ever since.
The mills add to these traces of the past. After modernization and the installation of electric motors, the Hintere Muehle remained in operation until 1958. A notarial deed dated 27 July 1692 authorized the construction of the Niedere Muehle as a grain mill with a water supply canal between Kappelen and Brinckheim. The Maison Foehrlé is a half-timbered house; municipal descriptions give its year of construction as either 1680 or 1687.
Nature
The wetland network along the Wurmbach in Kappelen comprises four depressions and an educational pond.
