Issenheim: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Issenheim is particularly known for the Retable d’Issenheim and the traces left by the Antonines. The Retable d’Issenheim was created between 1512 and 1516 for the Antonine commandery in Issenheim. Culture
The history of the Order of the Antonines is presented at the Espace muséographique du couvent des Antonins. A smaller reproduction of the Retable d’Issenheim can also be seen there, with panels that can be opened and handled. On the forecourt of the Antonine church, a gilded tau marks the former location of the Retable d’Issenheim.
The present parish church of Saint Andrew was built in 1826 after the former parish church was demolished in 1823 because it had fallen into disrepair. Visitors can admire a 19th-century Callinet organ in the church. The Maison Saint-Michel preserves the portal of the former Antonine monastery; Saint Anthony and Saint Veronica are depicted on the vault keystones. Its history is connected with a preceptory of the Order of Saint Anthony founded in Issenheim in 1277.
The townscape also reflects the area’s industrial past. The Ancienne filature Gast has a section of façade with offices in the neo-Tudor style. Its rectangular factory hall is characterised by a structure of cast-iron columns supporting groin vaults with skylights. In Issenheim, Villa Gast is one of the villas built for wealthy industrialists, with large gardens. The Retable d’Issenheim is still displayed in the chapel of the Musée Unterlinden.
Nature
Issenheim lies at the exit of the Lauch Valley in a natural landscape shaped by the Alsace Plain, the Vosges massif and its foothills. At the same time, the town is located at the foot of the sub-Vosges hills, about 2 km from the vineyards and the Alsace Wine Route.
In the area around Issenheim, the Grand Ballon offers opportunities for hiking, cycling, horse riding and snowshoeing all year round.
Geographical Location
The RD83 and RD430 roads are important for connections beyond the region. The RD83 connects Belfort with Colmar, while the RD430 connects Guebwiller with Mulhouse. The nearest railway stations are in Bollwiller and Rouffach; both are approximately 6 km from Issenheim.
