Illhaeusern originated as a fishing village after fishermen settled there in the 15th century at the confluence of the Ill and Fecht rivers. Among other things, the historic boatmen of Illhaeusern transported wine and grain to Strasbourg. In Illhaeusern, memories of fishing and shipping are kept alive through boat trips.

Culture

The Église paroissiale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul was rebuilt in 1958 after the previous church had been destroyed in the bombings of January 1945. The tower of the Église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul bears a wrought-iron fish commemorating the fishermen and boatmen who founded the village. The Église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul also features a non-representational ensemble of stained-glass windows that creates an exceptional play of light.

In Illhaeusern, the Fête de la friture was scheduled to take place on 3 and 4 August 2024 and 2 and 3 August 2025.
