Illhaeusern originated as a fishing village after fishermen settled there in the 15th century at the confluence of the Ill and Fecht rivers. The Église paroissiale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul was rebuilt in 1958 after the previous church had been destroyed in the bombings of January 1945. The tower of the Église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul bears a wrought-iron fish commemorating the fishermen and boatmen who founded the village.
