Culture and history

The Saint-Brice Chapel was rebuilt in 1870, extended in 1925 and restored in 1998. The Old Bell Tower of Illfurth is the only surviving remnant of the former church, which was demolished in 1973.

The oppidum in Illfurth covers five hectares, with two interlocking terraces and a defensive ditch.

Nature

The Massif du Britzgyberg comprises a thermophilous beech and oak forest on a limestone slope above the Ill Valley, as well as a small area of dry grassland. The dry limestone grassland on the Bluttenberg is home to around ten orchid species. The forested area of the Massif du Britzgyberg is also home to a small population of yellow-bellied toads; it contains the northernmost known populations along the Ill Valley.

Paths and places to visit

The circular trail Le circuit du Haulenwald is a 6.5-kilometre hiking trail with 100 metres of elevation gain and a walking time of around two hours; it starts at Burnkirch Church. Along the circular route, visitors can discover First World War bunkers, the site of a large gun near Burnkirch Church and several casemates.

The Belvédère viewpoint is located in the surroundings of Illfurth. The Cité du Train museum, the Cité de l'Automobile museum and Saint-Morand Church are also nearby. There is also a church in the immediate vicinity of Illfurth known as the Chapelle.
