Culture and History

The ruins of Weckmund and Wahlenbourg castles in Husseren-les-Châteaux are remains of a construction phase from the 13th century and have been protected as historic monuments since 1840. The Haut-Eguisheim castle complex comprised three keeps, including Weckmund, which was built in the south. Haut-Eguisheim Castle was destroyed in 1466; only the castle chapel dedicated to Saint Pancratius survived. The Weckmund keep and the residential building of Haut-Eguisheim Castle have preserved sections of their walls with windows.

The Church of Saint Pancrace was built in 1884 in the neo-Gothic style. Its choir has a pointed-arch vault, while the nave is flanked by side aisles and a porch tower. The church also contains a 14th-century statue of Saint Pancratius.

The early huts of Husseren-les-Châteaux housed craftsmen and workers who built the Three Castles in the 11th and 12th centuries.

Getting Around

The Route des Cinq Châteaux stretches for 10 kilometres and connects Husseren-les-Châteaux with Wintzenheim. Along the route, visitors can discover the ruins of three castles; it also provides access to Château du Hohlandsbourg. The Route des Cinq Châteaux offers remarkable viewpoints over the Alsace Plain.

The Route des Cinq Châteaux is accessible by car except in winter and follows an unpaved road. It is closed every year from 15 November to 15 March by prefectural order.
