Hohrod: Holiday Apartments and Houses

The natural landscape of Hohrod is classified as a Natura 2000 site. At the same time, Hohrod is connected to the 400 kilometres of signposted hiking trails in the Munster Valley, including the GR5 variant 531.

Between Hohrod’s circular trails, woodturning and the Ferme Versant du Soleil, you may find yourself wanting to rent a holiday apartment.

Trails and activities

Hohrod has three themed circular trails. The forests of Hohrod offer opportunities for environmentally friendly outdoor activities. The Barrenkopf Trail leads directly to Glasborn and runs through the village of Hohrod’s communal high pastures. At Hohrod’s Versant du Soleil, there are opportunities for walks and hikes around Rosskopf.

At the Au Bonheur des Ours workshop, introductory woodturning sessions are offered, during which participants can make their own candle holder or mushroom. In a workspace set up on the ground floor of her house in Hohrod, Doris Baerenzung gives ongoing woodturning demonstrations from Monday to Friday at 9:30 a.m.

History and culture

The Hohrodberg–Linge historical trail includes a German blockhouse, preserved as a remnant of the front line fortified by German troops from summer 1915 onwards. A German command post on the Hohrodberg–Linge historical trail is still in very good condition.

The Monument aux morts de la Guerre 1914-18 is located on the Route du Linge in Hohrodberg. It was erected around 1925 in memory of the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in the First World War.

The origins of Hohrod and Hohrodberg are associated with an early community of courageous pioneer workers known as the “Hohe Roder”.

In his workshop in Hohrod, Daniel Higlister continues the traditional craft of casting livestock bells. He is regarded as the last livestock-bell caster in Alsace and as one of only three bell casters of this kind working in France.

Farm products and regional insights

The Ferme Versant du Soleil in Hohrod produces traditionally made farm cheeses, including Munster AOP, Barikass and Tomette. Guided tours with tasting are offered year-round on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m., with additional tours on Fridays in July and August. During shop opening hours, a self-guided visit with information panels and a short video is also possible.

Hohrod can be reached via the D417 between Munster and Stosswihr; there, take the D5 towards Col du Linge.
