Culture and history

The Musée d'Arts Religieux is housed in the former Chapelle Saint-Thiébaut in Fréland. It displays archival documents, religious vestments, Catholic religious objects from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as paintings.

The Chapelle Saint-Thiébaut was built in 1896 in the neo-Gothic style and stands on the Rocher du corbeau above the fields. Since 1986, it has housed a museum of religious art; it was restored in 1994.

The Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption stands in the centre of Fréland. It was rebuilt and consecrated in 1706 and constructed again in the first half of the 19th century; it was rebuilt several times over the centuries.

The Musée du Pays Welche is located in a former rectory with six rooms, which contain a distillery, a woodworking workshop, a cheese cellar and a bread oven. The museum offers a guided tour lasting approximately two hours.

The three museums collectively known as the “trois musées Barlier” are the Musée de la vieille forge, the Musée de la traversée du siècle and the Musée des automates.

Getting around

The Sentier de découverte is 7.5 kilometres long. It runs through the Vallon de la Taupré, climbs via Tibremont and descends again via the Chapelle Saint-Thiébault, offering views of the Fréland landscape.

The Sentier des muletiers begins at the edge of Fréland. It follows paths used in the 15th and 16th centuries to transport ore from the neighbouring valley to Fréland, where it was smelted.
