Wittisheim: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Wittisheim is located in the Alsatian plain in the heart of the Grand Ried between the Ill and the Rhine–Rhône Canal. The village lies on a broad loess ridge landscape that separates the Ried areas of the Ill and the Rhine from each other.

Landscape and Nature

The Grand Ried is a wetland area of approximately 200 km² bounded by the Ill and the Rhine. In autumn and during snowmelt, it is regularly flooded by watercourses overflowing their banks.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint Blaise was rebuilt between 1832 and 1835 and extended between 1961 and 1963 by adding a transept. Its preserved crossing tower now serves as a baptistery and bell tower. The war memorial, made of pink sandstone in 1963 and set into the wall of the Church of Saint Blaise, is dedicated to the victims of the wars of 1914–1918 and 1939–1945. The baptistery of the Church of Saint Blaise is the last surviving remnant of the Church of Saint Catherine from the vanished village of Niffratzheim.

At the site of the former railway station stands a reconstruction of the AL 8415 locomotive, commemorating the history of the Riedbahnel railway line.

Water and Activities

The Botanical Educational Trail is a six-kilometre circular route. It begins next to Lake Koba and introduces plant species typical of the Ried. Swimming and picnics on the sandy beach are possible at Lake Koba; there is also a children's playground, a volleyball court and a fishing pond. At Koba Wake Park, visitors aged seven and over can go wakeboarding, water skiing or wakeskating.

Traditions and Crafts

The Plum Tart Festival in Wittisheim features exhibitions by local craftspeople and artists, music, dancing, children's games and displays of historic vehicles. At an event held at Wittisheim's artisanal walnut oil mill, the traditional pressing of walnuts to extract oil is demonstrated, followed by a tasting.

The artisanal Oléa oil mill in Wittisheim offers retail sales, advice, workshops and tours. From December to March, it is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., as well as for pressing by appointment; from April to November, sales and tours are possible from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
