Windstein is home to two impressive castle ruins. The ruins of Château du Nouveau-Windstein were classified as a “Monument historique” by decree of 21 March 1983. The ruins of Château du Vieux-Windstein were registered as a “Monument historique” by decree of 9 November 1984.

Château du Nouveau-Windstein is located on the GR53 between Lembach and Niederbronn-les-Bains. The GR53 crosses Alsace and the Northern Vosges from north to south or from south to north. At the same time, it forms part of the GR5, which connects the North Sea with the Mediterranean.
“Au fil des 5 châteaux” is a moderately difficult circular hike covering 17.2 kilometres, with a stated duration of five hours. At Château du Vieux-Windstein, the GR53 leads to a secured rear platform and to a front platform next to the climbing rock; the front platform offers a view of the village of Windstein.

The ruins of Château du Nouveau-Windstein can be accessed via a metal staircase inside. The GR53 passes between the two castles at the edge of the village of Windstein.
