The Church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur in Schwobsheim has been documented since 1371 and may be the successor to a sacred building already mentioned in 953. The parish church has a central entrance-tower porch, a nave with three bays, and a narrower chancel with a square floor plan.
Culture
The choir of the church contains a depiction of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, created by the wood sculptor Joseph Saur in 1953. Saint James, patron saint of the parish, was added to the panel painting in 1956.
The Baroque organ in Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur is listed as a historic monument. A complete restoration was entrusted to Richard Dott from Munster; the organ was dismantled for this purpose in 1994.
On Rue de Sundhouse, at the edge of the public road, there is the wayside cross “Christ en croix (B)”. The sculptor Gabriel Hugel from Sélestat created it in the second half of the 19th century on behalf of François Antoine Zumsteeg.
The Alsatian house at 11 Rue de l’École, dating from 1718, is included in the cultural heritage inventory of the Grand Est region because of its wall and ceiling paintings. The farm belonging to the Alsatian house built in 1718 comprises a main house with a French-style roof, an auxiliary building, a pigsty, and a distillery workshop.
As every year, the festival committee organizes the traditional flea market in the streets of Schwobsheim.
