Culture

Schillersdorf preserves typical Alsatian farmstead ensembles; several 18th-century farmhouses have been preserved in the village.

The farmstead at 15 rue des Comtes-de-Hanau is a closed courtyard with exposed sandstone; the rear gable of the residential building is timber-framed. The residential building was rebuilt in 1867, the barn is dated 1802, and the western outbuilding to 1837.

A Napoleonic resting bench on the C.D. 105 is listed as a protected historic monument.

The Lutheran parish church was built in 1851 and contains contemporary furnishings as well as modern stained-glass windows. The lower part of the church tower preserves traces of an earlier medieval church. The complex of the Free Evangelical Lutheran Church is located behind the car park.

History

Schillersdorf was founded during the Merovingian period in the 6th or 7th century.

Pastor Christian Schroeder (1748–1807), a representative of the Enlightenment, lived in the 1740 vicarage. He advocated moral, technical and, in particular, agricultural progress, introduced clover cultivation in Schillersdorf and promoted agricultural experiments, including with alfalfa.

Nature

Schillersdorf is located near the Parc Régional des Vosges du Nord.

The areas designated for natural forest development are intended as biodiversity reserves and as places for observing forest life and its adaptations to climate change.
