Niederhaslach: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Collégiale Saint-Florent was built from 1274 on the site of an older structure dating from the early 7th century. The large portal dates from 1310 and depicts the Annunciation, the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, and the legend of Saint Florent. The building has been classified as a French historic monument, Monument historique, since 1846.

Culture and History

The windows of the side aisles date from the 14th century and depict scenes from the Bible and the lives of the saints. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary contains a monumental Holy Sepulchre from the late 14th century, which has been preserved in its entirety and without any significant alterations. The Jardin du cloître contains heraldic tomb slabs from the 14th and 16th centuries associated with the canons and local nobility.

There is also a bas-relief of the Mount of Olives from 1492 on the church wall of the Jardin du cloître, with remnants of its polychromy still preserved.

Devotion to the Virgin Mary

At the site of Korbel in the Niederhaslach area stands the blue-clad statue of the Virgin Mary known as the “Vierge Bleue”. It was created by the sculptor Rebel from Urmatt and erected at the request of the workers from Niederhaslach who worked at the “Mullerhof” factory.

The Saint Florent tradition includes a procession through Niederhaslach with the relics every year on the Sunday after 6 November. The Chapelle du Marxhof was rebuilt after its destruction during the Revolution and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary on 17 June 1804. It can be reached via Rue du Tir or Rue de la Chapelle and is open during the day.

Nature

Niederhaslach is affected by a Natura 2000 protected area of the “Special Protection Area” type, located on the ridges of Donon-Schneeberg. A 4.93-hectare succession island in the Niederhaslach communal forest is considered a favorable and stable habitat for the capercaillie.

Walking Tours

The municipality provides a leaflet for a walking tour through the village to discover the canons’ houses. Of the 12 recorded canons’ houses, 10 have been preserved to a greater or lesser extent and remain recognizable. In addition, the signposted 9-km circular route “Circuit des croix” allows visitors to discover several wayside calvaries; a brochure is available at the town hall.
